Sometime in December 1928, the San Francisco Mint introduced a reverse die with an experimental mintmark to its dime production. The S displays a broader body and more elongated serifs than any other San Francisco mintmark in the Mercury dime series. David W. Lange (The Complete Guide to Mercury Dimes, 1993), among others, believes that only 15-20% of this issue's total mintage of 7,400,000 pieces was delivered with this Macro S. While we do not know how many of these pieces are extant today, it is safe to conclude that this is the scarcer of the two 1928-S mintmark varieties.

Writing in 1988, Breen stated that most Mint State survivors of the '28-S Macro S exhibit poor striking definition.
