The worst years of the Great Depression were over by 1936, and the rising economic activity required a large coinage of quarter dollars at the Philadelphia Mint. This issue is very plentiful across all grades through MS 66, and there are a fair number of certified MS 67 examples for the most discriminating collectors. The typical 1936(P) quarter has very bright, lustrous surfaces, though many will show die erosion lines. While these sometimes enhance a coin's luster, collectors are encouraged to seek pieces that were struck from fresh dies.

For this date and subsequent issues through 1964, the Philadelphia Mint's Engraving Department settled on the Heavy Motto subtype of 1934 as the master hub for this coin series. Though the obverse was later tweaked just a bit to sharpen the designer's initials, the master hubs seen on 1936 quarters endured for all circulating quarters until the switch to copper-nickel-clad coinage in 1965 required lower relief.

The only variety of significance is a nicely doubled obverse that shows a distinctive shift in both the date and IN GOD WE TRUST
