Though of lesser mintage than the 1936(P) issue, this date is actually more common in top grades. Sharp strikes and blazing luster typify many of the survivors, and this issue shares the spotlight with 1938 D as one of the most popular issues for type collectors. The coin illustrated has a decent strike, but better ones are available.
Single doubled-die varieties are known for obverse and reverse, the latter being more easily discerned. With such a huge mintage requiring hundreds of dies, it's surprising that no others have surfaced.
