The 1943 Steel Cent was minted in Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco. These Steel Cents are made of Zinc-Coated Steel. They were often referred to as "Silver Pennies" The Steel Cents are slightly lighter in weight. The "Silver Pennies" were unpopular back in the 40's as they were often mistaken for dimes. Also, the Zinc-Coating quickly wore away!
The 1944 and 1945 were made from "Shellcase Copper"! The U.S. Treasury found an acceptable source for copper-used shell cartridge cases. The "Shellcases" were made from these recycled shellcases made of 95% Copper and 5% Zinc!
