This large mintage issue is highly variable in quality. Many 1944 P nickels show clashed or worn dies, some of them having irregular luster from these flaws or from attempts to extend their life through vigorous and clumsy polishing. Gems are nevertheless plentiful if one is not too picky about detail and die state. Coins having either 5FS or 6FS are a bit elusive as compared to D-Mint nickels.
More than two dozen repunched mintmark varieties are known for 1944 P, none of them particularly exciting.
