1944-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar Doubled Die Reverse (DDR). (#1) Graded Mint State 65 by PCGS. This Strong Class VI doubled die (distended hub doubling) features strong extra thickness seen on all lettering near the rim of the reverse. It is of my opinion that the extra thickness can be mostly easily seen on the words HALF DOLLAR. It's really obvious on the letter O of DOLLAR! Extra thickness can also be seen on the outer parts of the pine branch and needles, and E PLURIBUS UNUM. Being that PCGS will not designate this particular doubled die on the tag inside the slab, this pretty WLHD is basically a doubled die by default. Lightly toned and quite rare in this high, lofty grade. Several of the attached photos are from the excellent reference book on the Walking Liberty Half Dollar Series authored by Kevin Flynn. There is also a photo of this listing from the Variety Vista website.
