The huge mintage of 1945 P nickels seems to have led to rushed work of mediocre quality. Most are not fully struck, and worn dies are frequently seen. On the plus side, so many Mint State pieces survive that finding a decent one is just a matter of patience. Even so, 5FS pieces are quite scarce, and 6FS coins are genuinely rare.
This issue is a variety hunter's treasure trove, as it is known for several doubled-die reverses of an appealing nature. In addition there are dozens of different repunched mintmark varieties, several of which are prominent enough to carry a premium. These varieties are attributed by NGC under its VarietyPlus Service.
