1953 RCM Canada 80% Silver Uncirculated Set All PCGS Graded MS62-64
Here we have a 1953 RCM Canada Uncirculated Set of all coins from the 1953 Canada 1C through 1953 Silver Dollar.
The Dime, Quarter, Half Dollar and Silver Dollar are all 80% Silver, but the real value lies within their numismatic condition.
I have attached pictures from both before they were graded and after they have been graded.
All coins have been graded by PCGS as PCGS MS64 with the exception of the Quarter which graded PCGS MS62. All Cert Numbers are consecutive except for the Quarter which was sent in a separate PCGS submission for restoration services.
I actually bought this set a while ago which was advertised as a RCM PL Set. The RCM didn't actually start making PL Sets until 1954 when a mere 3000 of these sets were created. There has long been controversy if there was a PL set created in 1953. After much research, I can surmise there were Specimens or Special Strikes created before 1954 which were sold/distributed individually in very limited supply. The easiest way to distinguish the coins intended for circulation from the Special Strikes or Specimen Strikes is when there there is or is not a Shoulder Fold or Strap on Queen Elizabeth's Shoulder.
Coins with No Strap are the much more common business strike coins and those with the prized strap would be the much more valuable Specimen or Special Strikes. There are other ways to confirm the strike such as looking at the I in DEI on the obverse. With serifs means No Strap, and without serifs means With Strap.
The 1953 Quarter that was part of this "set" was spotted and I even sent it to PCGS for professional restoration. They were able to improve the surface quality but not entirely remedy the surface cloudiness issues which is the main reason this coin only graded MS62 while all the others graded PCGS MS64
First Up is the 1953 1 Cent or Penny graded PCGS MS64, No Strap, has amazing toning on the reverse. Vibrant deep purple and red swirl with sea green and aqua and golds to yield tremendous eye appeal.
Next, the 1954 5 Cent or Nickel, PCGS MS64, No Strap, Far Leaf Variety has deep black and watery fields. Of all the coins submitted, I thought this one had the strongest PL characteristics. Unfortunately PCGS will not use the PL suffix on any business strike Canadian coinage essentially to prevent confusion over PL strikes vs business strikes. Regardless, this is a great looking coin.
Third, we have the 1953 10 Cent Coin or Dime, PCGS MS64, No Strap. Pretty coin with light toning and nice reflective fields.
Next is the aforementioned 1953 25 Cent or Quarter graded PCGS MS62, No Strap. Cloudy surfaces do impede the eye appeal but still an attractive coin with a nice black and white contrast of devices to fields.
5th is the 1953 50 Cent Coin or Half Dollar graded PCGS MS64, No Strap. Strong mirrors or PL qualities on this coin with tremendous eye appeal and pretty clean surfaces. Coin does not appear to be that far removed from the gem level grades.
Last but not Least by any stretch is the 1953 Canada Silver Dollar, No Strap, FWL graded PCGS MS63 FWL. The FWL designation stands for Full Water Lines vs the other variety of Single Water Line. FWL can also stand for the "Fine Work, Laureate Portrait" reverse design. The Single Water Line or SWL comes with a Wire Edge where the FWL variety, which is the No Strap variety comes with the Flat Rim vs. the Wired Rim.
YOUR BID IS FOR THE EXACT SET OF 6 COINS SHOWN IN THE PICTURES.
