1953-S Paper Wrapped/Foil Wrapped BU Roll Jefferson Nickels Uncirculated
1953-S BU Roll of Jefferson Nickels. This roll is in a generic steel shell wrapper with the date stamped on the roll. The roll is not crimped but is still tight and the coins inside the roll have been wrapped in aluminum foil, a common practice from the 1950's-1960's to help prevent toning and maintain the original mint sheen
Nice thick stock paper stock
With regards to 1953-S Nickels, this is among the poorest struck issue in the entire Jefferson Nickels series. There are just a few isolated known examples with full steps. The vast majority of 1953-S Nickels have very flat designs, flat as a pancake which is believed to be due to the US Mint reusing the dies from earlier years and they would have been obviously quite worn out from millions of previous strikes. It is not unusual to see these coins with not only no steps, but to show just basic outlines of the Monticello and other major details. Do not confuse poorly struck coins with wear.
Unbroken luster rolls over uncirculated coins whether they're fully struck or poorly struck. This roll, being in a tight wrapper and wrapped in foil has not been opened by me so I have no idea as to the quality of the coin inside but I would taper expectations to expect poorly struck examples. But, I do not know ...
We almost never apply the adjective Gem or Gem BU to raw coins understanding just how difficult it is to obtain those grades from the top two Third Party Grading Services. Overusing this term diminishes the value of coins truly deserving of this descriptor. It's also blatantly false to use that term so casually and lightly.
