1953-S dimes were widely hoarded at the time of issue. This didn't reflect a low mintage or any other desirable feature beyond the natural inclination of collectors to cherish S Mint coins. Gems are plentiful, but most of these are rather poorly struck. The soft, blurry features typical of S Mint dimes during the 1950s actually made them a little more resistant to contact marks, while simultaneously giving them the bright, richly textured luster that means so much in market grading. The discriminating collector will find it quite challenging to locate a high grade specimen that is also fully struck.
Kevin Flynn's book on Roosevelt Dimes illustrates three repunched mintmark varieties, and two of these are significant enough to be attributed by NGC under its VarietyPlus Service.
