When the San Francisco failed to strike nickels in 1955, its unused reverse dies were overpunched with D mintmarks for use at Denver. About a dozen such dies are known, and the resulting coins are collectively certified by NGC as simply D/S. Only the sharpest and most desirable D/S die, FS-501, is so distinguished by NGC under its VarietyPlus Service. The lesser D/S varieties bring smaller premiums, and collectively they are not all that rare.
