This issue is fairly typical of the decade in that most have deficient strikes. The partially struck portions of the design reveal the numerous marks that were already present on the planchet and can hold down the grade. In addition, many 1957(P) nickels were coined on dark planchets.
The obverse star was enlarged for the master dies of 1957-58, and this was clearly an improvement in appearance. Only minor DDO and DDR varieties are known, most of these applying to the proofs.
