Four different reverses were used on 1968-S quarters: TYPE E (RDV 5), TYPE F (RDV 6), Type G (RDV 7), and Type H (RDV 8). Types G & H are common and most 1968-S quarters found in proof sets will be Type G. This quarter is not TYPE F since it has no serif on the N in "UNUM" and it is not Type H as the leaf just left of the arrow tips does NOT rise above them. This quarter is the EXTREMELY RARE TYPE E (RDV 5) which comprises no more than 1% of the entire mintage. TYPE E is the variety which has a pointed leaf to the left of the arrow tips that does NOT rise above them and the "N" in "UNUM" has no serif. Type E can be distiguished from the common Type G (RDV 7) (which is about 75% of the entire mintage) for three reasons: #1 it has a short leg on the "N" in "UNUM" rather than a long (thicker) one on Type G. #2 of the three leaves that point at the tail feathers only the two at the left actually touch the tail feathers whereas on Type G all three touch the tail feathers. #3 the leaf just left of the arrow tips has a pointed tip rather than the rounded tip seen on Type G and the top two arrow points have a noticeable distance between them and the leaf to the left whereas on a Type G reverse (see a 1969 Philadelphia strike quarter for reference) these two arrow points are much closer to the leaf to almost touch it.
