Here is one of KEY DATES in the Lincoln Cent series --- the famed 1970-S Small Date (High 7). This coin has lots of Red for a Red Brown coin and not a lot of distractions for an MS-64. If I loupe the coin there is a horizontal contact mark that extends from just to the right of Lincoln's mouth toward the rim and on the reverse I can then see some spots in and on either side of the Lincoln Memorial tough most are on the right side and none are active carbon spots. If you cannot tell the difference from SMALL DATE vs. Large Date on 1970-S Lincoln Cents please take the time to look at my last two obverse pictures. Let's begin with the third obverse picture. Notice how "LIBERTY" has a weak mushy strike? This is the easiest way to tell Small vs. Large and this works on the proof cents the same way it does on the business strike coins. Now look at the fourth obverse picture. See how the top of the "7" is level with the other digits in the date? This is a marker common to all Small Date 1970-S cents whether they a business strike or proof coins. This is why some people call the Small Date the "High 7" because all Large Date 1970-S cents feature a "7" that has a top much lower than the other digits in the date.
