this penny gets a lot of attention and is supposedly impossible to find.
All the pics online show this in a MDS (medium die stage). slight differences could be attributed to die stage or it could be that there is a second DDR that has not been attributed yet. Notching, line separation and spreads leave no doubt that the reverse is a doubled die.
Cherrypickers and other sources list it starting around $1000 for EF. i am low on cash and the current price leaves room for you to make a few bucks flipping it.
i just noticed the 'extra ear' under the SE lobe of the regular ear. you can see it without a close up if you zoom on the pic. i have seen this cent before and it also had the extra ear. i also remember hearing it on a video someplace. anyway, it is there to see so i guess if the obverse were attributed, that would be a variety in itself.
That would make this a first discovery but I didn't look to see if it was listed anywhere else as such. the usual sites show one variety and that is the reverse.
see pics - you can't miss the doubling on the edge lettering. E PLURIBUS UNUM caught most of the gas bubbles on this coin but you can see the separation lines and thickness to the west.
if you can't, ask me for more pics.
i'm not satisfied with the pics of E PLURIBUS UNUM so will replace some of them shortly.
check out the distinct notching on the upper left corners of the UN in UNITED.
Doubling on STATES is about the strongest. The reference books usually show the OF after states, so compare that to other pics and see.
thanks.
