1988-S Proof Set
Proof Set sales declined by almost 750,000 sets in 1988, but still remained above 3 million sets. This lower mintage has made the price of 1988 Proof Sets very volatile, and they can jump dramatically in short periods of time.
Each set contained five coins: One example each of the Lincoln Cent, Jefferson Nickel, Roosevelt Dime, Washington Quarter, and Kennedy Half Dollar.
About the sets: All coins in the 1988-S Proof Set were intended to have a Cameo or Deep Cameo Finish.
Mintage: 3,031,287 sets
Original packaging: The coins of the 1988-S Proof Set were placed in individual holes in a purple-colored, textured paper and cardboard insert, then sealed in a two-piece, clear plastic case. The case was then inserted into a protective outer cover, consisting of purple cardboard, imprinted with the somewhat confusing silver words: "United States Mint Proof Set "¢ 1988." The new collector might ask, "Is this a Mint Set or a Proof Set?"
