1990 New Zealand 5-Coin Silver Proof Set, Produced by the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate the rich history of New Zealand

5 CENT COIN: 'The Kotuku' (White Heron) design is symbolic of New Zealand's freedom of spirit, flying toward a new horizon.

10 CENT COIN: 'The Canoes' design features early Polynesian double-hulled canoes that (1000 years ago) voyaged from Hawiaki to Aotearoa, carrying up to 60 people as well as provisions and a fireplace. Some canoes were 3-masted with sails made of plated pandanus mats.

20 CENT COIN: 'The Tory' design depicts The HMS Tory, the ship used to transport the first group of settlers from England in 1840, marking the beginning of British colonization of New Zealand.

50 CENT COIN: 'The Child and the Tree' design depicts the planting of 700,000 trees in 1990; one tree for each child living in New Zealand at the time.

ONE DOLLAR COIN: 'The Treaty of Waitangi' was signed in the Bay of Islands on February 6, 1840; a pact between the Maori People and the British Crown, allowing all immigrants to live in New Zealand alongside the Maori People. The Waitangi Treaty is a founding, living document on which New Zealand "should" see itself in 1990.
