1999-P American Eagle Proof Silver Dollar W/Case, Box & COA
Product Details
As the 20th century neared its end in 1999, an economic slowdown and fears over the digital impact of Y2K led to an increase in popularity for precious metal products. The Silver American Eagle coin enjoyed some of its greatest demand at this point in its history, and both the proof and bullion versions experienced growth this year. Today Silver.com offers the 1999-P Proof Silver American Eagle coin for sale.
Coin Highlights:
In the late 20th century the Silver American Eagle coin program went through a period of growth that had never been seen to date in program history. After a period of decline in popularity during the early and mid-1990s, the program grew each year from 1997 into the early 2000s.
Production was up sharply in 1999, with the bullion coin accounting for the vast majority of the growth. Bullion mintage went up 2.6 million from the previous year, while Proof Silver American Eagles saw one of their largest year-over-year increases at nearly 100,000 additional strikings in 1999.
On the obverse of all Silver American Eagle coins you’ll find the image of Walking Liberty. This design came from Adolph A. Weinman in 1916, one of many artists chosen by the United States government in the early 20th century to redesign American coins. Weinman’s creation hadn’t featured on a coin in 39 years prior to 1986, having been removed from the nation’s half-dollar coin in 1947.
The reverse features a heraldic eagle design from then-Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, John Mercanti. His design is similar to historic versions, with the addition of 13 stars arranged in a triangular shape above the eagle’s head.
1999 was a unique year for the Silver Eagle program. Production of proofs had shifted from San Francisco to Philadelphia in 1993, and now the bullion coins were also struck in Philadelphia. It marked only one of two years however that this would occur.
