History: Challenger, the bald eagle imaged on the coin is a living representation of the Bald Eagle's successful Endangered Species Act of 1973. Challenger fell from his nest in 1989 and after having contact with humans, he was no longer able to survive in the wilderness. Challenger has flown at major historic and sporting events and events, such as the World Series, major NFL and the Olympic Games.
The 2008-S Bald eagle commemorative half dollars had a maximum authorized mintage of 750,000 coins between both the un-circulated and proof coins combined.The coins were last offered by the U.S. Mint on December 12, 2008.
