Authorized by the same legislation that provided for the four different 2009 Lincoln Cents, the United States Mint was directed to create the 2010 Lincoln Cent. The new penny was released for circulation on February 11, 2010.
With a reverse "emblematic of President Lincoln's preservation of the United States of America as a single and united country," the 2010 design will be used in coming years as well.
The final design of the Union Shield was presented to the public in November 2009, during the official launch ceremony of the Presidency in D.C. Cent on the U.S. Capitol Grounds.
