Official coinage for the British Virgin Islands was first issued in 1973. The obverse designs were all made by the famous designer Gilroy Roberts, who designed coins such as the U.S. Mint's Kennedy Half Dollars.

Gilroy Roberts, the noted designer of other coins such as the Kennedy half dollar of the United States, was up to the task of creating a spectacular numismatic aviary for this set. The obverse of this set of coins depicts Queen Elizabeth the Second in an interpretation by Arnold Machin. This set proved to be extremely popular. By the end of order 112,163 sets in this format had been issued. To accommodate this mintage, every coin in this set has a mintage of 181,000 pieces.
