BU Roll 1958 90% Silver Washington Quarters, 10 of which are Type "B" reverse. Lustrous, BU Uncirculated
BU Roll of 40 Coins: 1958 Philadelphia Mint issue Washington Quarters. All coins are Philadelphia mint issues with mostly brilliant and full cartwheel luster. 10 of these coins have a Type "B" reverse while the other 30 have the much more common and standard, Type "A" reverse.
I have stacked the ten Type "B": reverse at the top of the roll, tails side up followed by the two end of roll toned coins (both toned coins are Type "A"), then the other 28 type A coins heads side up for easy differentiation.
If you are unfamiliar with the differences in Type A & B reverse coins, you can find information in the Cherrypicker's Guide or on NGC Coin Explorer (errors and varieties) or on PCGS' Coin Facts.
Type A and B reverse quarters were only found on Philadelphia mint issues and only during the years 1956-1964. Generally speaking, the closer you get to 1964, the rarer the type B reverse will be (most common on the 1956-year issue, least common on 1964).
The last 3 pictures, pictures 10, 11 and 12 demonstrate and show side-by-side comparison of a Type "A" and Type "B "reverse. The Type "A" reverse is the most common reverse by far and was intended for business strike coins. Type "B" reverse was intended just for Proof strike coins. There are several pickup points to verify if your coin is a Type "A" or Type "B" reverse, but the two easiest pickup points that can be verified with the naked eye are:
1. If there is separation between the serifs of the E and S in STATES in States of America.
2. Look at the vine and leaf above the A in Quarter Dollar. The vine and leaf are much thicker (high relief) than on the Type "A". The whole reverse is in High Relief, but it is very easy to differentiate Low Relief from High Relief at this location.
The type B reverse was designed for proof strike quarters only from 1956-1964. Some of the hubs with Type B reverse ended up being used on some business strikes in Philadelphia. Of them all the 1956 are considered downright rare. All type B reverses on any date are very scarce. More information can be found in the Cherrypickers Guide.
