Canada's first coinage. The coin were conceived to be used also as convenient units of measure; the diameter is exactly 1 inch and 100 pieces weighed 1 avoirdupois pound. Nevertheless, they were not very popular at first and were discounted, sometimes by as much as 20%, to get them into circulation.
Coin depicts the design of a youthful Queen Victoria with a laurel wreath in her hair. Inscriptions as follows:
"VICTORIA DEI GRATIA REGINA" meaning "Victoria, by the grace of God, the Queen".
Depicts a serpentine vine with 16 maple leaves. There are numerous slight variations involving the leaf stems or the vine stalk.
