DE ADMIRALS FLAG VAN ADMIRAL HOWE 1779 HMG MEDAL 1939
Horace M. Grant. initials (H.M.G.)1936 REPLICIA
This is a modern brass copy of the Rhode Island Token made in 1936 by the Robbins Company of Attleboro, Massachusetts for Horace M. Grant. Grant owned a hobby shop at 109 Empire Street in Providence, Rhode Island. His initials (H.M.G.) were added in the ocean area on the obverse so the copy could be easily distinguished from the original. Additional info pasted below: The Rhode Island Ship Token of 1779: Introduction The origin and significance of the Rhode Island Ship Token has long been obscure. It is now thought the idea for this medal was conceived during the second half of 1779, sometime after Spain joined France in declaring war on Britain. The medal was minted in England for distribution throughout the Netherlands, most probably, during the second half of 1780. It commemorated a victory of the British Admiral Richard Howe.
