Silver price has increased a fair amount since I first listed these coins. Five different 90% silver Walking Liberty Half Dollars, one for each year that the United States had military involvement in the war. Philadelphia minted 1941 1942 1943 1944 1945. Right after the December 7, 1941, bombing of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese warplanes, the U.S., declared war on Japan and Germany. War in the Pacific began with major Naval engagements followed by a significant number of bloody land battles on strategic Japanese islands. The early years of 1941, 1942 into 1943, witnessed explosive naval and military casualties but the U.S., ultimately, gained superiority in the Pacific. Eventually, the 2 Atomic Bombs dropped on the Japanese homeland in late Summer, 1945, pummeled them into submission and WWII ended. Before the Japanese surrendered, Europe, mostly overtaken by the Germans, had been invaded by the Allies on June 6, 1944, at Normandy, France. Terrible losses were sustained on the 3 major beachheads. However, once the Allies gained footholds, there was progress fighting the Germans and pushing them back. Russians from the East had there hands full with the German thrust deep into Russia. Stretched out fuel supply lines, severe winters, and relentless Russian resistance ultimately resulted in German defeat, captures and retreat. Too much about the war to talk about. This 5-coin Walking Liberty Half Dollar set is a great reminder of Freedom's victory and the U.S. contributions to turning the tide of war and ultimate victory over the Germans and Japanese.
