Franklin D. Roosevelt played a significant role in national and global affairs during the 20th century. As the longest-serving U.S. president (1933-1945), FDR first guided the nation through the Great Depression by introducing a series of federal government programs, known collectively as "The New Deal," that provided badly needed jobs for millions of unemployed Americans. Then, on the day after the Japanese executed a surprise bombing raid on the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in 1941, Roosevelt signed a declaration of war against Japan that paved the way for America's entry into World War II.
Despite his declining physical health, FDR guided the United States as it teamed with its allies to defeat the Axis nations of Japan, Germany, and Italy, leading to the demise of Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini. The Allied victory helped to preserve democracy in many parts of the world. FDR died in April 1945 during his fourth term in office, just one month before the end of the war in Europe and four months before its conclusion in the Asian Theater.
