In business together in near Savannah, Georgia as early as 1898, George C. Varn (1860-1931) and Samuel L. Byrd (1871-1953) partnered in a grocery store and oyster cannery on the Wilmington River just to the south of the famed Bonaventure Cemetery. Both Varn and Byrd were natives of South Carolina and also operated a pair of oyster canneries in their home state. At the firm's pinnacle in 1906, four canneries were in production - two in Georgia, the original cannery in Thunderbolt and another at Sapelo near Brunswick - and two in South Carolina, one at Yonges Island and the other near Bluffton
