Founded by Joe King, the business first opened around 1916 at 1309 Hewitt Ave. King’s ads often used the phrase, "Where all the boys meet.” It would later become a tavern and in 1938 the building was condemned by the city for being a safety hazard, as it was leaning significantly to one side. King very soon after moved his business to a more modern building in another part of town. Joe King passed away in 1940 at the age 63. Following his death, his name lived on at the establishment under other operators until about 1960. Today, the address is home to a coffee bar.
