The enduring legacy of John F. Kennedy continues to impact the lives of Americans to this day. Born into a family of wealth and privilege, Kennedy went on to serve in the U.S. Navy during World War II, earning the distinguished Navy and Marine Corps Medal. After the war, JFK devoted the remainder of his life to public service. He represented the 11th U.S. Congressional District of Massachusetts from 1947 to 1953, which was followed by his election to the U.S. Senate, where he served for seven years.
In 1960, Kennedy narrowly defeated Richard M. Nixon to become the 35th president of the United States. During his time in office, JFK laid the foundation for the Civil Rights Movement and helped America avoid a potential nuclear attack by the Soviets during the Cuban Missile Crisis. But Kennedy is probably best remembered for helping to generate a feeling of optimism that pervaded the entire nation. Sadly, the Kennedy presidency and the sense of hope that it fostered came to a tragic end with JFK's assassination in Dallas, TX, in 1963.
