Called the "King of American Coins" by numismatic experts, the 1804 Silver Dollar is undoubtedly the most intriguing coin in American history. The first 1804 Silver Dollar was actually minted in 1834 to be presented as gifts by President Andrew Jackson. Using the last recorded date of production, the new silver dollars were dated 1804 despite being struck thirty years later. Only eight of these coins were minted in 1834, and most of these were given as gifts, but a few found their way into the hands of fortunate collectors.
The "Dexter Dollar" specimen that was originally purchased for $1,000 in 1884 by Denver businessman James Dexter. It sold at auction in 2000 for an astounding $1,840,000.00! Remarkably, the following year, another 1804 Silver Dollar known as the "Sultan of Muscat" specimen sold for a record $4,140,000.
