OBW Original Bank Wrapped Roll - 1946 BU Jefferson Nickels City National Bank Trust Chicago
Very scarcely encountered Bank Stamp, City National Bank and Trust of Chicago on this very scarce, early bank wrapped roll of BU Uncirculated 1946 Jefferson Nickels.
This roll checks all the boxes as far as scarcity of date/mint mark, scarcity of bank, condition of roll - all are in the top percentile of what one can expect to hope to find in the wild.
Much scarcer bank, and equally scarce earlier 1946 Philadelphia BU Roll of Jefferson Nickels. Greysheet Bid/Ask is not always on target with BU Rolls, mainly due to the irregularity with the sale of many dates. Often, this is a product of there simply not being any recent data of completed sales for many of the lesser seen dates/denominations. The other factor as to why Greysheet is unreliable in it's roll pricing data is not all BU Rolls are created equally. Bank Wrapped Rolls (Original ones) command a significant premium over tubed rolls as tubed rolls will imply cherry picking vs. the unknown of what lies within a bank wrapped roll.
Additionally, not all bank wrapped rolls were created equally. Scarcer banks, rolls that are original than others, and myriad factors dictate certain rolls will sell at a premium, often a significant premium to more generic rolls, rolls that are not original, shotgun rolls (no bank stamp), or wrapped rolls with paper that seems a bit too "modern" for the era the roll is from.
All that adds up to this roll checks all the boxes as far as scarcity of date, scarcity of bank, condition of roll - all are in the top percentile of what one can expect to hope to find in the wild.
As much as Greysheet may not be the best barometer for current value for many BU Rolls, Greysheet can be used to measure scaricty. What I mean is if you check Greysheet BU Roll Values for the 3 1946 mints, P, D and S, you will see the Philadelphia roll has the highest price points. The Philadelphia mint issue for many BU Rolls, of all denominations from the mid 1940s through about 1953 seems to indicate often Philadelphia is the scarcest and most valuable BU Roll. Greysheet is a great tool and often an accurate refreence point in helping collectors and dealers come up with fair price points for many nmumismatically collectible items. But, it is just that, one tool.
