This roll came from one of the recent live auctions I attend every 2-3 months locally in New Hampshire. These rolls are consigned from estates and come from long time collectors, dealers and estates The roll is being sold exactly as it was purchased in this auction.
Proof is a manner of how coins are struck, not a grade. Some newer collectors sometimes get confused on what Proof means. Proof coins were specially prepared coins by the US Mint specifically for collectors. They polished the dies extra heavily, and coins were struck twice under high pressure where business strike coins are only struck once. Dies would not be used as long as they were used on business strike coins, and they would be polished more frequently as well. As 1964 Proof Kennedy Half Dollars came from Proof sets and were the one and only year the Kennedy Half Dollar was 90% silver (until the 1990s), they were not exempt from being cut out of proof sets and squirreled away, or even spent in commerce! Thus, just because a coin is proof, doesn't exempt it from being circulated. Business strike and proof coins are graded by the major third-party grading services using the same 70-point scale; they just have different guidelines and metrics used for how those grades are assigned.
