Known as "The Great Communicator," Ronald Reagan served as the 40th President of the United States from 1981-89. Born in Tampico, Illinois, in 1911, Reagan gained notoriety as an actor after moving to Hollywood in 1937. His first foray into politics was serving as president of the Screen Actors Guild, the labor union for actors, where he worked to diminish the Communist influence on Hollywood during the late 1940s and early 1950s.

A lifelong Democrat, Reagan became a conservative Republican in the early 1960s. He then embarked on a successful run for governor of California, an office he held from 1967-75.

After narrowly losing to Gerald Ford during the 1976 Republican presidential primary, Reagan earned his party's nomination in 1980 and subsequently defeated incumbent Jimmy Carter in the 1980 presidential election. During his eight years in office, Reagan championed conservative policies and values as part of a movement that became known as the "Reagan Revolution." Because of the largely successful pursuit of this agenda, many view Reagan as one of our greatest American presidents.
