5 sets of the 1987 p and d uncirculated mint sets.
sealed in the original mint mailing box unopened.
Here are a few of the highlights about the coins in these sets.
In 1987 the U.S. mint only produced 2.89 million mint sets for that year, they also only minted the same number of Kennedy half dollars at both the Denver and Philadelphia mints in 1987, thus the only way to get the 1987 Kennedy Half dollars was from these sets. Other than the more modern (2002 to date ) Kennedy half dollars, the 1987 Kennedy half dollars were the only other half dollars that were produced that were not intended for circulation. Also the 1987 Kennedy half dollars had the lowest number of minted business strike coins other than a few years in the 70's. Here are a couple of excerpts from PCGS about the 1987 Kennedy Half dollars:
Jaime Hernandez:
The 1987-P Kennedy Half Dollar was considered to be one of the scarcer coins in the series shortly after it was struck. It's mintage was only about 2.89 million which was considerably low. Especially if compared to the mintage of other Kennedy Half Dollars struck during the same time period, for example the 1980-P Kennedy Half Dollar had a mintage of over 44 million.
Then in 2002 the Mint surprisingly struck about 3.1 million Kennedy Half Dollars at the Philadelphia Mint and another 2.5 million at the Denver Mint. In the following years the Mint continued to strike very low mintages at both Mints.
The 1987-P Kennedy Half Dollar seems to be scarce in MS66 condition but there are probably still thousands out there that have not been graded. In MS67 condition far fewer exist, probably a few hundred examples survive. In MS68 condition it is really scarce and less than 5 are known with none being finer.
Jaime Hernandez:
The 1987-D Kennedy Half Dollars were only issued in Mint Sets for the year. No 1987-D Kennedy Half Dollars were released into circulation by the U.S Mint. However, the Mint had previously announced that the coins would not go into circulation. This allowed collectors to buy them directly from the Mint. As a result, mintages for the 1987 Mint Sets were significantly higher than the previous year.
Most 1987-D Kennedy Half Dollars remain in high grade since they should have never entered circulation. Only examples in MS67 grade or higher appear to be scarce with less than several hundred examples surviving. Coins in MS68 condition are considered a condition census, since there are less than a dozen graded by PCGS with none being graded higher.
