Often very dark gray or off black. Read more below on this coin. In the late 1800s, the U.S. Mint struck a variety of silver coins for the Kingdom of Hawaii. One of those coins was the 1883 Kingdom of Hawaii Quarter featuring the bust of King Kalākaua I.
Many certified, even uncirculated have a dark gray or blackish color. This coin has often been cleaned in the past and cannot be certified original. I very seldom get these coins certified by PCGS, NGC or ANACS. Only 500,000 minted. However, when US mint quit making them in the 1880s most were collected and melted for silver bullion making the real amount of existing coins very low.
