Everett was named for Everett Colby of New Jersey, son of Charles L. Colby, who invested heavily in the Everett Land Company in 1890. Originally called Port Gardner, Everett is located on Port Gardner Bay at the mouth of the Snohomish River. Early industrial activities centered around the logging industry, and in 1912 included 12 sawmills and 16 shingle mills.
