hi.
while it looks like somebody scratched up the field to the east of the bust, the scratches seem to be imbedded in the lamination. the obverse is smooth. when the light hits it right, the scratches show off some different colors but i can't get a clear pic of the devices when i try to do that.
this coin came from a jar of coins which were in storage for over 30 years. i think if those were surface scratches, some oxidation would have taken place in all that time.
all in all, a sharp looking cent with a lower mintage, just above 50,000,000 were made.
