One major variety of the 1803 Draped Bust Half Cent (Penny) features a widely spaced "3" in the 1803 date on the obverse of the coin. It is sometimes very hard to distinguish the difference between this variety and the normal date - but the "3" is slightly further away and more widely spaced away from the "0". The "8" is also closer to the "0" vs the normal date variety which as a more widely spaced "8". The difference between the normal date vs widely spaced 3 date is depicted below in the example comparison image of the obverse of the coin:



Perhaps the easiest way to identify and distinguish this variety is to simply view the reverse of the coin. Specifically note the spacing between the two zeros "00" in the 1/200 denomination fraction at the bottom. In the normal date variety - the space is actually much wider. Where as in the "Widely Spaced 3" variety - the double zeros are practically touching and are very closely spaced.
