There were two major varieties of the 1834 $5 Classic Head Gold Half Eagle. One variety features a plain "4" in the 1834 date (as depicted above). The "4" in this variety has a straight end on the right side - whereas the crosslet "4" variety has a cross at the end on the right side. The differences between the plain "4" vs crosslet "4" are easy to distinguish and is depicted below by the arrows in the example comparison image.
