1828 Capped Bust Half Dollar - Square Base 2 - Small 8s - Large Letters

Another major variety is the 1828 Capped Bust Half Dollar with a square base on the "2". This variety features small number 8's in the 1828 date and large letters on the reverse of the coin. Unlike the curl base 2 - the square base is flat and comes up at straight square angle. The difference between the square base 2 vs curl base 2 is depicted below in the example image of the coin varieties:

1828 Curl Base 2 vs Square Base 2 Capped Bust Half Dollar - Difference and Comparison

This variety has small 8's which can be distinguished from the large 8's variety by noticing that the small 8's have more spacing between the numbers whereas the large 8's are much closer to the numbers as they are larger. In addition: If you line up the tops of the "1" and first "8" in the 1828 date - the line will intersect the "2". However with the large 8's variety - this line will go above and over the 2. These features are depicted by the arrows in the example comparison image below of the 1828 small 8's vs large 8's varieties:

1828 Small 8s vs Large 8s Capped Bust Half Dollar - Difference and Comparison

The small 8's variety has two sub-varieties. This one happens to have larger letters on the reverse of the coin whereas the other variety has smaller letters. Sometimes it is difficult to distinguish the difference - but there are a few things to look at.

The left side of the "S" in the word "STATES" will line up with the left side of the letter "P" in "PLURIBUS" in the small letters variety - but will be oriented more to the left in the large letter variety. The right side of the first "A" in "AMERICA" will line up with the right side of the "M" in "UNUM" in the large letter variety - but the "A" will be oriented more towards the right in the small letter variety. The letters "S A E" in the word "STATES" have been repunched in the small letters variety. A slight doubling of those letters can be seen just to the left of the overlying letters. The top have of both letter A's in the word "AMERICA" have been filled in somewhat in the small letters variety as well. The difference between the 1828 Small Letters vs Large Letters half dollars is depicted below in the example comparison image:
