I was always interested in collecting. I started to collect stamps from around the world in my teens as well as other collectible items like books, figurines, glasses etc., (on a small scale).
Currencies and their designs has always been fascinating to me, I wanted to collect them too. But I had a big setback; I was allergic (so to speak with almost anything I touch let apart money in general). I used to call it ‘Dirty Money’ they are disease carrier blah, blah, blah.
My husband joked with me one time saying “maybe you are germ-o-phobic”. I was taken aback by his comment I never thought of myself as such, I told him I have never been diagnosed with this. The fact is, I wouldn’t have thought he would see me this way, I said please don’t say that, I hope am not. Days later, I re-think about the way I have been and realized maybe I am germ phobic after all!
My interest in collecting persisted, I wanted to study and collect money. I was happy to learn that I do not have to wash currencies like coins for example; It might scratch or even devalue them as a result. As I was already overly concerned about touching anything and everything to the point that I would over-wash my hands all the time, it took me a while to come to terms with it.
I did not start collecting money until 13 years ago, with some Canadian and American currencies; and one Haitian 50 Gourd note I still own.
About 6 years later I noticed an article in my news feed a couple of times, which I ignored at first. When it showed up again over a few months period. One day I decided to take a closer look.
At that point, it mostly depicted Washington quarters and their errors which I never knew currencies have errors, let apart they can be worth a decent premium even thousands of dollars. When I finish reading the article I went and checked all the money I collected all those years. Some were Washington quarters, few Jefferson Nickels, Roosevelt dimes and some Canadian money.
I looked for errors which was not easy for me to detect with my naked eyes of course. Second of all, l was clueless as to what I was doing. I only knew I love collecting! Even the word Numismatic did not resonate with me at first. I used to call it (Numanistic’‘Numinismatic) and anything in between. Now you know the reason my online name is NewMsMatic, (lol). I literally had a hard time pronouncing the word, I practiced for weeks. Until I finally got it right.
As an avid reader, I had a small loupe that I used to read small writings with. So I decided to check the currencies. Unfortunately It was not helping very much.
One day when I visited my mother-in-law, she gave me a bigger loupe. I went home excited thinking now am fully equipped to see everything I needed to see, I realize it still did not satisfy my curiosity. I had to accept that I was not experienced to pinpoint any significant details or even understand how to look for errors, find rare coins etc., Every scratch I find, I thought it was an error. Some of them, I thought they were rare. That’s how bad I was at it.
After a couple of trials I decided to buy a jeweler’s- type loupe. Wow!!! That is exactly what I needed and it worked well, I thought. Even though I worried my eyes could go bad, I was so elated that I could not stop, I kept looking through it for hours and hours at a time, until my eyes were red and it hurt. Finally I decided to take breaks in between, but not for long, before I was back at it again. I am amazed I still have good eyesight!
Not long after that, I decided to seriously take it to the next level, I bought some related books Cherry pickers guide, the Red book of USA coins etc., just to mention a few. I studied and learned a lot from them, I still do, plus I also learn on different sites online as well.
Now I am hooked to this passion, I really love and enjoy the whole concept of collecting. I buy and sell various currencies here. But I am crazy about Lincoln cents! You can also find me on Unisquare.com, where I sell currencies, dolls, figurines, glasses and everything else. My specialty is in collectibles.
I hope you find something that interests you in my collection.
Thank you for your time!
